John Candy was more than simply a cheerful chubby guy; he was one of those actors who appeared to have humour in his bones. The effects might be catastrophic if he added a touch of pathos. Planes, Trains, and Automobiles are by far the best in that exclusive subgenre of movies about stressed-out males trying to get back to their loved ones for the holidays.
It succeeds not because both Candy and Steve Martin are effortlessly amusing – though they are, and it’s lovely. But it’s all building up to that last scene, which is filled with indelible, tear-jerking poignancy.
99. Duck Soup (1933)
Director: Leo McCarey
Writer: Bert Kalmar (story), Harry Ruby
Cast: Groucho Marx, Harpo Marx, Chico Marx
IMDB: 7.8/10
What do you say when a movie is approaching its first century and still seems as topical, relevant, and subversive as it did when it was originally released? Duck Soup, the Marx Brothers’ greatest film, takes them far away from their New York music hall setting and into a warped miniature Mittel-Europa filtered via immigrant memories and fairytales.
A conflict is building between the noble people of Freedonia and the crypto-fascists of Sylvania. With a softer touch than Chaplin’s Great Dictator, the picture mocks not just fascism but also patriotism and politics in general: here is a satire that uses a sledgehammer and a scalpel in the same scene.
100. Ghostbusters (1984)
Director: Ivan Reitman
Writer: Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis
Cast: Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd
IMDB Rating: 7.8/10
Who are you going to contact if New York is overrun by horrible ghouls? You already know the answer: four self-proclaimed Ghostbusters who are prepared to run in and blast the ghosts into oblivion.
The have-a-go-heroes who are flung into the limelight with entertaining outcomes are a big part of this sci-fi comedy’s appeal. Bill Murray’s deadpan, womanizing scientist is unquestionably a standout, but Rick Moranis’ idiot living in Manhattan’s most haunted building offers insane character comedy.
