Sony has bought Crunchyroll, a leading streaming service based on the anime niche specifically at the whopping cost of $1.175 bn. Through this timely acquisition, Sony has also secured Crunchyroll’s existing subscriber base, which is more than 120 million registered users including 5 million paid subscribers.

Sony also showed its interest in buying Crunchyroll during the last year by bidding $957m.

According to Sony executive Tony Vinciquerra,

With Crunchyroll and Funimation, we are committed to creating the ultimate anime experience for fans and presenting a unique opportunity for our key partners, publishers, and immensely talented creators to continue to deliver their masterful content to audiences around the world.

Vinciquerra also said,

With the addition of Crunchyroll, we have an unprecedented opportunity to serve anime fans like never before and deliver the anime experience across any platform they choose, from theatrical, events, home entertainment, games, streaming, linear TV – everywhere and every way fans want to experience their anime.

Our goal is to create a unified anime subscription experience as soon as possible.

Sony is planning to merge both Funimation and Crunchyroll into one single streaming service

As you might know, Sony is also a parent company of Funimation. Furthermore, Sony wants to benefit from the existing streaming war with both hands.

Therefore, the company has decided to merge both anime-streaming services into a single streaming platform. It means viewers will access Funimation and Crunchyroll media content under one roof on different devices in near future.

Apart from this, Sony can also offer Crunchyroll subscriptions to its subscribers as a part of a premium PlayStation Plus membership but this move has not been finalized yet.
